James Heenan, a West Deptford Volunteer Firefighter, was severely
burned in a house fire on New Year's Day, 2001. Believing
someone might have been trapped in a burning house, Verga firefighter
Jimmy Heenan, went into the house in the early morning hours of
January 1 only to have the floor collapse under him, sending him
into the basement, with burning debris falling on him. He
was trapped for almost 30 minutes before he was rescued. Heenan
sustained 75% burns.
Investigations following his death revealed that he probably should
not have been sent in to the building at that time, and measures
intended to protect him almost certainly contributed to his injuries.
James Heenan, whose battle with severe burn injuries united a community,
died at the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa., where
he had spent almost three months in a coma.
James Heenan's name was added to the National
Fallen Firefighters Monument at the National Fire Academy in
Emmitsburg, Maryland in October 2002.
James, 37-years of age and a volunteer fireman for 18 years, and
a life-long West Deptford resident is survived by his wife, Patricia,
two sons James and Michael, a sister Lisa, a brother Thomas and
his parents James and Patricia.
